Abstract : Online troubles caused by sexting, which refers to sending sexual messages and images via the internet, has recently been one of the serious problems in the environment surrounding the internet. Psychological study of sexting has only just begun and so it is necessary to understand the reality of the situation in Japan. This study involved a survey about sexting experience among 382 Japanese university students. The result showed that only 11 (3%) students knew the term "sexting." One hundred fifty two (39.8%) students have experienced sexting. The students who intentionally performed sexting were 33 (8.6%) although it includes only passive sexting experience of receiving data. Nineteen (5%) students sent sexting data. The results indicated that the knowledge of the term "sexting" was not common among Japanese youth and that knowledge of the psychological mechanism underlying sexting is needed to understand the related risks.
